Writing Instructor & Journalism Advisor
Ian Park is currently a senior at Mission San Jose High School in Fremont, California. In the fall, he plans to attend Northwestern University, where he will pursue a double major in Journalism and Economics.
From an early age, Ian found creative writing as an outlet to explore world-crafting and storytelling. After winning awards for flash fiction & short story submissions to the Scholastic Art & Writing awards, he naturally gravitated towards journalism as a platform where he could air out the most pressing thoughts of both himself and his community. Ian joined MSJ’s Columbia Scholastic Press Association award-winning newspaper, the Smoke Signal, in his sophomore year as a staff-writer. Now, he’s become a senior editor dedicated to mentoring younger writers closely throughout the writing process and hosting workshops on pressing issues such as the social responsibility of journalists and the current state of journalism.
Outside of the newsroom, Ian has found a niche for himself as a student leader, becoming MSJ’s ASB President. During his time leading ASB, he has helped organize major events such as a district-wide panel on mental health and racial microaggressions, club rushes for underclassmen, and fundraisers raising thousands of dollars for causes to combat the Australian wildfires and local food insecurities.
Ian is looking forward to working with you at the Vanguardian by bringing his experience and refined skillset to help you achieve your academic goals and sharpen your writing abilities!
